Garlic farm Mättö
Mättö garlic farm is located in Ruokolahti, in the village of Virmutjoki. The farm specializes in cultivating winter garlic, from which the curly flower stalks are used to create Aleksandra, a green garlic paste made with domestic canola oil. Aleksandra is entirely homegrown and naturally green. The paste is jarred in Lappeenranta, making it a truly local product.
“Growing, harvesting, chopping, and washing the flower stalks are labor-intensive tasks. At each stage, the product goes through a quality check. So, with confidence, we can offer you a high-quality uniquely domestic product that you won’t find anywhere else." – Farmer Vesa Mättö
Garlic cultivation is mostly done by hand. Tasks such as planting, harvesting and chopping the flower stalks, weeding, and lifting the bulbs are all performed manually. We strive for organic fertilization and do not use herbicides to control weeds. The fields are irrigated with water drawn from Lake Saimaa, allowing us to proudly say that our garlic is nurtured by the power of Lake Saimaa.
We make the most of the winter garlic by selling the bulbs as they are, while the flower stalks are turned into a flavorful paste. Nearly the entire plant is utilized, minimizing waste.
Aleksandra green garlic paste is available directly from our farm, at markets, and through retailers across South Karelia, South Savo, and throughout Finland.
