Beekeeping in the Landscapes of Lake Saimaa
Our honey is produced along the western shores of Lake Saimaa, in forests and meadows shaped by the rhythm of the seasons. The flavour varies according to the harvest and flowering period – wild blueberry, raspberry, lingonberry, dandelion and fireweed each leave their own distinct imprint on the honey. Every summer yields a slightly different harvest.
What began in 2019 as a small beekeeping hobby has steadily developed into a dedicated craft. Today, honey is harvested from around 50 hives placed in carefully selected sites along Lake Saimaa.
All queens are bred by the beekeepers themselves, and only the bees’ own wax is used in the hives. The work is guided by the well-being of the bees and respect for the natural cycle. The honey is extracted and jarred by hand in small batches. It is unprocessed, with nothing added. Every jar is fully traceable directly to its producer. Honey is one of the most frequently adulterated food products in the world. For this reason, honey from a local beekeeper is more than a sweetener – it is a product of trust.
“Local means responsibility to us. We want every jar to be genuinely from the Saimaa region and fully traceable. We know exactly what is in the jar.
- Elina & Martti Häikiö
Bees do more than produce honey. They are essential pollinators and directly influence the harvest of berries, fruits and wild plants in the region. Beekeeping also supports biodiversity and helps sustain the vitality of the local cultural landscape.
Our honey is available through direct sales and selected retailers in South Savo.
