Janhula Farm - Ancient Grains from South Savo
Janhula Farm is a small family farm in Juva South Savo. The farm has history of raising animals, especially dairy cows, but today the farm has taken a new path in crop cultivation. In recent years, Janhula has focused on spelt – an ancient variety of wheat – and harvested its very first crop in August 2024. The grain is milled at Rutalahti Mill in Jyväskylä.
Farming at Janhula combines conventional methods with principles of regenerative agriculture. The main crop is winter spelt, with spring spelt also included in the rotation. At Rutalahti Mill, the harvest is processed into wholegrain flour, groats, and a coarse bran-like meal. These spelt products are available in a range of package sizes, from handy 800 g bags to 20 kg sacks.
What fascinates me about spelt is its ancient character and history. Its long, flexible stems carry ears of grain, where each seed develops safely within several husk layers. This is how the crop has grown for centuries – and how it has been preserved for us today. – Elsi Janhunen
