Toivola Farm has been in the Kainulainen family for four generations. Over the years, the farm's focus has evolved, but grain cultivation has remained a constant. One of the crops is Issaanvaara heritage rye, a variety dating back to the 1920s from Lieksa. This rye is milled into flour and sold to both consumers and partners.
 
The first pigs arrived at the farm in the early 1990s, and the first woolly pigs were acquired in 2016. Mangalitza is one of Europe’s oldest heritage breeds, ideally suited to Finland's climate thanks to its thick layer of fat, which allows the pigs to thrive outdoors year-round.
 
Mangalitza pigs grow slowly, with their fat marbling beautifully through the meat, making it exceptionally tender and juicy. The meat is also higher in unsaturated fats than saturated ones. Toivola Farm sells this premium meat directly to customers, through food co-operatives, and to stores and restaurants.
